Type Specimen Book

Third project of Typography is make a Type Specimen Book.

Instruction

I chose 'Goudy Old Style' and search about it, sketch, and quality control for feedback.
information
search and brainstorm
I made 3 alternatives for cover :

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

And i designed inside the book, but ms.Uma gave me feedback for some of them, like :

Feedback : page 5 better if the circle without online. page 6 looks like too crowded, but goudy old style has a neat type, so its doesn't match
Feedback : page 8 the alphabet is untidy and distracting the page. and the orange G better without outline

Feedback : page 9 the dark brown is too heavy and better the timeline in one spread, so it will looks neat and easy to read. Page 10 the dark brown is too heavy too, and should be change with something that simple and lighter.

Feedback : right page, it doesn't match with the criteria of Goudy, because Goudy has a neat type, it should change the design.

I want to put Goudy photo in my book, i made it like this :

                    original photo

edited in photoshop to match the photo with the color tone

Then i changed the design and finished them all. I use French binding so i have pattern inside the binding.

page 1 - 2

page 3 - 4

page 5 - 6

page 7 - 8

page 9 - 10

page 11 - 12
page 13 - 14
page 15 - 16

I am really happy ca finished this book. not bad and I enjoy when i design this book. After i submit this book, there are some feedback, like this :

Maydeline - "Overall the result is really great. I really like the paper choice, especially the cover. The color is also great. The feeling alas fits with the image of the typeface. My favorite page from her type specimen book is the page 4, it's really simple and look really beautiful. Page 7 though, looks a bit messy, maybe it's the color choice? Bit it's really informative & interesting to look at."

Kezia - "Jesslyn type specimen already good. But there's some pages, like page 3 needs to be fix because little bit messy, and page 11 also. The background cover needs to be repaired also."

Yasmin - "Your font specimen book is really informative. we will know almost everything about the font (detailed). Some of the glue doesn't really stick well so i think you should re-glue it. The boldness of the dark colors may be bolder. A cleaner result would be awesome."

Calendar 2013

HAI EVERYONE ! Final Project for Typography class  this term is make a calendar 2013. Miss. Uma gave me an instruction paper :

For this final project, you are assigned to create a calendar (desk or poster) of 2013 with chosen theme. Below is the process of your calendar. Please follow each step to show the process and progress.

Step 1 : Bring your research of your theme (ethnicity/region/cultures) that will supports your new typefaces. should be printed.

Step 2 : Brainstorm keywords and come up with 3 ideas.

Step 3 : Apply the 3 keywords and visualized typographically by representing each keyword. Work with grids, layouts and compositions.

Step 4 : Use your own (new) typefaces for your calendar design and combine with one of typeface below.

(Cleredon, Baskerville, Helvetica, Filosifia, Garamond, Futura, Bodoni, Century, Extend, Optima, Frutiger, Bell Gothic, Franklin Gothic or Universe)

Step 5 : You may use 1-2 images. however, focus more towards typography grids and hierarchy.

Step 6 : Final work printed on matte paper.

SPECIFICATION : size (open) | Digital | CMYK
Deadlines : February 4th 2013

According to the alphabet before, most of them have pattern so i decided to choose 'ethnicity' as my theme.

I have plan that will use my reference as my color tone. And i have 3 keywords : Playful, Useful, Simple. Then i sketch some calendar like this :

January 10th 2012, i have a quality control (1st) with miss Uma, and she gave me feedback, "Focus on your new typeface. use one or two typefaces in one page. Hierarchy is for your typefaces". So i made 2 alternative design again :

sketch 1 (only one/two alphabet in 1 page)

sketch 2 (the typefaces as the name of month, but i only use 3 letters)

Now i focus on my typeface and asked to ms. Uma again for quality control (2nd). Ms Uma gave me feedback, "Sketch number one is better because the second one is too crowded if you use 3 letters in 1 page. Keep going with sketch 1."

I started to sketch from cover until december :

Cover and page one (quote)
January - April
Add caption

May - August
September - December

I decided to print them in A3 paper  (wall calendar) - one month one page.
For the third draft, i made some choices and met ms Uma for quality control (3rd) :

Then, ms Uma gave me feedback "you should make the new typefaces bigger and make contrast big and small between alphabet and the date."

I tried to fix it and i thought the calendar is boring in black and white. I decided to add color to make it more 'cheerful' :D according to the first concept on merchandise project, i used yellow color. honestly i don't like yellow color, its like dizzy color LOL. but yellow means like glowing, and i want to make "the glowing 2013" hahah -_-

This is the final :

final draft

for the cover, i use 1 image as pattern (i edited the original image. and put the pattern on 'rule of third' composition.

the new typefaces are not used all on every page. i put them on the first page.  So in this calendar there are A - Z alphabets. then i added a poem about new year by Joanna Fuchs.

22 February 2013 is the submission day, and i take a picture before i submit it :)

me and my calendar :DD
For design this calendar, i used Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator. I learnt how to use illustrator and indesign program better :D
