Circulation of Knowledge - Newsstand

Imagine that we are on the stages of learning. From the bottom, we start to be passionate in reading, because we believe that knowledge can grow like a water drop that evaporate from the sea and flow as far away as a cloud can go. For final project of comping techniques class is make a newsstand. This is a group project. We have some sketches and chose this one

To make the cloud, i cut a duplex 20 cm x 5 cm, and stick it together and make a curve. then i wrap it with newspaper to make them always together :B After that i stick the cotton balls to cover the cloud.

For the raindrops, water vapor, sea, grass, and flower, we made it from mika plastic and pattern origami.

Then we started to paint the background. Our concept for background is color pallet and we chose blue color (sky). I bought a can of blue paint, a can of white paint, and a can of thinner. Then we mix them to make gradation from dark blue until white.

i was painting the background :D i ordered to make triplex cut into two because i can't bring it once in real seze (200 cm x 150 cm). So i brought it one by one.

For the shelf, we drill the ' L '

Alphabet Book

My first project in comping class is make an Alphabet Book. Everything is handmade except printing the page. Everyone in the class have 2 alphabet random and each alphabet will made from paper, found object, collage, and illustration. I got alphabet 'N' and 'U', so i will make 8 images.

First, i make letter N (Paper, found object, illustration, collage)

PAPER : black paper and newspaper (N for News)

FOUND OBJECT : novel (N for Novel)

ILLUSTRATION : i draw N and a nurse (N for Nurse)

COLLAGE : search, print, and combine (N for New York)

Then i make letter U (paper, found object, illustration, collage)

PAPER : black and white paper (3D)

FOUND OBJECT : card

ILLUSTRATION : black and white mosaic

COLLAGE : search, print, combine (U for Usher)

i made them all manually and i scan and printed. My friends made 8 images too, so we can share with each other. Now i have all alphabet, from A to Z and 2 symbols (* and #). Then i decided to make the book with japanese binding, with tab, have some words at the beginning, use recycle paper, and looks like old.

And finally, this is my alphabet book! :)

Really happy when i can finished this book :D and i learnt so many things from this book process :)

Handmade Book, Tape Binding (Hard Cover & Soft Cover)

Hello guys! Today i want to share about my experience make my own book with hard cover and soft cover.

First, you need to prepare all materials and tools.

+++ Materials :

1. A4 Paper 200 sheets *

2. Duplex

3. Wrapping paper *

4. Book Cloth *

5. A4 paper 1 sheet **

* You can choose your own style/colour :)

** i suggest you to choose a paper that matches with wrapping paper/book cloth

+++ Tools :

1. Cutting mat

2. Cutter

3. Scissors

4. Glue (PVA glue is better)

5. Brush for glue

6. Awl

7. Pencil

8. Thread

9. Ribbons

10. Metal Ruler

11. Needles

After you prepared all needed things, LET'S START! :DD

STEP 1 : Fold 5 sheets A4 paper into 2 parts (like A5 paper). 5 sheets = 1 signature. Do it to all papers. So, you have 20 signatures for hard cover and 20 signatures for soft cover.

STEP 2 : Make 4 hole in the folding line with AWL. first hole is 1,5cm from the edge. second hole is 6cm from first hole. third hole is 6cm from second hole. the forth hole is 6 cm from third hole and make sure 1,5 cm from edge.

STEP 3 : prepare your thread and needles. and start sewing like this :

STEP 4 : Do it to 20 signatures, from right to left, and be BABABABABABABABABABA Signature in 1 book (hard cover / soft cover)

STEP 5 : Stick the ribbon to binder to make them tidy and tight.
